Applied Engineering, Inc., located in Yankton, SD, is a growing, world-class manufacturer of precision machined aluminum components and assemblies for the defense, aerospace, communication, and electronic, industries.   Applied uses advanced machine tool and robotic technology combined with technological know-how to supply precision machined components and assemblies to our customers. 


The Quality Team Lead plays an essential role in our business establishing priorities for the quality technicians.  This position also interacts with our internal customers to provide guidance on external customers’ requirements.  This individual is a proven performer with high attention to detail and possesses strong organizational skills while taking direction from several different functions.


Duties and responsibilities


  • Work with manufacturing and customer service to understand and establish priorities as a support function to optimize production and quality.  Labor and hour adjustments may be necessary to successfully complete schedule requirements on a weekly basis
  • Carries out leadership responsibilities in accordance with Applied Engineering’s employee handbook.  Consisting of interviewing, hiring recommendations, general supervision, assignment of duties and responsibilities, coaching, progressive discipline as needed, and resolving conflict
  • Work with team to develop standard work instructions and methods for inspections, testing, and acceptance evaluations based on company and customer criteria. 
  • Assure all team members have the tools and training needed to properly perform their work
  • Monitor team member performance to standards as well as evaluate the standards themselves for effectiveness, consistency, and accuracy
  • Determine and take action on the steps to attain continuous improvement to inspection standard work and inspection methods
  • Work with manufacturing leadership to ensure acceptance criteria are understood and part of the manufacturing process
  • Must be able and willing to engage in various improvement activities on the plant floor and out of the office
  • Other duties as required




  • Associates degree or equivalent experience  in a manufacturing environment
  • The ability to teach and train others in a coach or mentor role as needed
  • Must have a practical understanding and proficiency in engineering drawing interpretation to include GD&T requirements
  • Individual must be able to work with little to no supervision after initial training period, showing a high degree of initiative and self-motivation.  Must demonstrate consistently being a good example of providing informal leadership and excellent work ethic
  • Strong reading, writing, problem solving, and analytical skills
  • Must possess strong computer skills, with experience in Word, Excel, and other windows based software. Must be able to accurately and efficiently generate instructions, reports, etc.
  • The ability to teach and train others in a coach or mentor role as needed
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality of customer and company information
